Hydrogeo were commissioned to undertake a Coal Mining Risk Assessment (CMRA) for a client planning a terraced housing development in Bristol. The Bristol Coalfield can present a particular challenge for developers due to the dense urban environment, long history of mining and complex geology.
The proposed development was located in a Coal Authority designated ‘High Risk Area’. Our team comprising Chartered Geologists completed the CMRA which included a detailed review of information on geology, hydrogeology, historical mining activities, their potential impact on ground instability and any risks that could affect the proposed development.
By reviewing abandonment plans it was found that mine workings did not extend beneath the site at a shallow enough depth to pose a risk to the development. This allowed development to proceed without costly and time consuming site investigation.
