Swan Lane – West Bromwich
Client: Green Square Accord / St. Georges Enabling
Hydrogeo were commissioned at an early stage in the project by St Georges Enabling who were advising Green Square Accord on site redevelopment comprising 147 homes for affordable and social rent on the site of a former gas works on Swan Lane, West Bromwich.
Hydrogeo were commissioned to provide specialist Geo Environmental Consultancy support during planning the redevelopment of the former Swan Lane Gas Works, West Bromwich. The area has a rich industrial history with the local town Gas Works shown on historical mapping from 1890 and the earliest available OS mapping records (c.1825) showing Bellsmoor Colliery with associated mine shafts. The phased site redevelopment is to comprise a total of 147 homes for affordable and social rent.
Hydrogeo were commissioned in order to progress:
- Intrusive site investigation;
- Groundwater monitoring,
- Quantitative controlled waters / human health risk assessments;
- Remediation Strategy.
These works were required in order to satisfy planning conditions assigned to the development of the site by the LPA Sandwell Council. Approval of the DQRA and Remediation Strategy was required prior to enabling and construction works commencing.
Hydrogeo liaised directly with key stakeholders including the Local Authority Contaminated Land Team and Environment Agency in order to satisfy sign off on the Remediation Strategy which facilitated commencement of enabling works at the site.
Following regulatory approval and competitive tendering site redevelopment commenced in January 2024.
